Model
T Safety
Inspection
at Hoist Services
January 13, 2005
On
Sunday January 13th, the club hosted a Model T inspection at Tom
Leroux’s shop in Garden Grove. Everyone began showing up at 8:00 A.M.
for a bit of coffee talk and donuts. Then a about a half an hour
later cars began to drive up on the rack for inspection.
Overall most of the cars were in good
condition. There didn’t seem to be any major problems. There did
seem to be one common adjustment made on the majority of the cars, and
that was tightening and taking out the slop in the drag link. The
drag link is the rod that connects the pitman arm at the bottom of the
steering column to the ball joint on the tie rod. This is an item
that is frequently overlooked, and can cause the steering to be loose
and slightly unresponsive. This was easily remedied with a formed
penny placed inside the ball cap as a shim.
There were a total of 14 antique cars
and several moderns that participated at the inspection. Not all made
it up on the rack, but everyone conversed and enjoyed looking under
the hood, so to speak, of those who did have their cars inspected.
For those who wanted to stay out of
the sun, Tom had a TV set up in the shop that was showing an
instructional video on how to tighten loose wood wheels. At Noon
lunch was served. The club provided soft drinks, chips, and a giant
sub sandwich for those in attendance.
Off to the side John Hinton had 2
Model T engines that needed slight restoration work. The black and
white photo shown on the front page of the Magneto News does not give
the full effect of the picture. But if you visit the website you can
view the pictures in color, and really understand what it will take to
get these engines going. Once again, a big Thank You goes to Tom
Leroux for letting us use his shop to host this event. Hope to see
everyone on next month’s tour.
