There were three Model T Club’s touring
together on September 30th. Eve Wagner of the Southern
California Model T Club was the Tour Director and was assisted by
her husband Harold. The Long Beach Model T Club toured from the
Bagelry at about 9:00 AM and arrived in La Habra at about 10:00.
Long Beach brought out ten cars and the members attending were; Larry and
Rae Blair 19 Touring, Ted Bridges 15 Touring, Joe Brun 35 4dr
Convertible, Will and Sue Campbell 26 Touring, John Craig 24
Delivery Van,, Lonnie Gibson and Zoe Harris 30 A Pickup Truck, Frank
and Mary Harris 22 Speedster, Jeff Hood 15 Touring, Phylis Horner 21
Coupe, Mike Neesham modern, Phil and Joy Reed 15 Speedster, and Bob
Schwink, 22 Widow Maker.
All together there were over 35 cars and about 60 or so people from the
three Clubs attending the tour and we were never all together in the
usual parade configuration. We met up with the Orange County group
in La Habra and then toured through lovely neighborhoods with tree
lined streets and even at times wound up on country roads. Our first
actual stop was at the historic seven room Bailey Home which was the
first dwelling built in Whittier. It is a sort of a California
Bungalow and was built in 1887. Period furniture and many personal
items and photographs of the Bailey family were there for all of us
to see. Outside it had a buggy barn with a huge beefy gravel
hauling wagon parked in it and there was a deep cellar full of
barrels off to the side. A covered cistern was located in the back
yard. The home was originally the headquarters for the 1270 acre
Bailey Ranch which was located in what was then called Puente Hills
before it was re-named Whittier. In the early days the setting was
called the “Mustard Ranch” due to the abundance of the wild native
California mustard growing in the fields. The docents were dressed
in period clothing and treated us to home made cookies from a period
earthen-ware jar, the cookies were very delicious and “Fabulous
Phylis” . . . . reportedly had many of them.
After touring the home, we were guided to many historic places of
interest about the streets of Whittier with very complete directions
provided by the Wagner’s. We eventually wound up at the Rose Hills
Rose Garden which was in full bloom and many pictures were taken
during our visit there. We then departed for the lunch stop at
Sako’s Restaurant in Santa Fe Springs at 2:00 in the afternoon.
Some people stopped to do a little shopping in the antique stores
along the way. The servings of food were huge and the menu was
unbelievably complete. The lunch was over by 3:00 and we were home
before 4:00. The Campbell’s went home on a trailer courtesy of Larry
Blair, due to a connecting rod noise.
