Phil

Shop Tour
July 22nd,
2006
Who says Model T Fords boil over?
Saturday July 22 about 37 people in 14 Model Ts, a WWII Jeep, a ‘35
Ford, a ‘47 GMC cabover, and a couple of moderns left The Bagelry for
Phil Reed’s shop, Electronic Chrome and Grinding Co. in Santa Fe
Springs, where Phil’s son — gave us an informative shop tour on the
process of grinding and hard chroming crankshafts. Crankshafts are
only a small part of Phil’s business though. We also saw repairs being
made on oil drilling tools and a whole cart full of pieces used to
mount the brake pucks on the San Francisco cable cars. As the outside
temperature climbed into the triple digits Phil showed us around his
museum of his personal automobile collection including British,
French, and American cars from 1902 through the 1960's One of Phil’s
cars was owned by Gene Autry at one time, and one of his cars is the
only example known to exist!
We left Phil’s shop around 12:30 headed for Los Alamitos and Dave
Taylor’s shop, Superior Engineering. When we arrived, Tom and Reggie
Leroux had the BBQ hot and the drinks cold. After eating all the
hamburgers, hot dogs, Italian sausage, and hot links we could hold, we
went into Dave’s shop where one of his employees, ---- showed us how
to make our own bolts using a lathe and a mill. Dave and his brother
also have an interesting collection of old cars some of which are
under construction and some of which are waiting. The candy apple red
Cadillac should be great!
As I said the temperature climbed well into triple digits, and although I
do not know how hot it was in Santa Fe Springs or Los Alamitos, it was
101 at the Long Beach Airport, so you know it was much hotter where we
were! Even so we had a fantastic turnout with 37 people at Phil’s and
32 at Dave’s. A few people had other commitments in the afternoon and
had to miss out on the BBQ. Even with the high temperature, I didn’t
see one boiling T, although I think a few of us were nearing boilover!
Thanks to Phil, Dave, Tom and Reggie, and to Ed for securing and
delivering the tables and chairs.
