President Jeff Hood

 HAPPY BIRTHDAY LBMTC

This month, October, marks the actual 100th anniversary of the introduction of the Model T Ford in October 1908.  October also marks the 54th anniversary of the founding of the Long Beach Model T Club in October 1954.

I drive a pickup that I bought new, 23 years ago.  It is dependable transportation that reliably takes me anywhere I want to go.  I recently bought a 43 year old Mustang that I also drive regularly.  Newer cars may have more gadgets and comfort items, but I never think twice about driving either one of them anywhere.  It is not at all uncommon to see other pickups and cars as old as my truck driving around, and I often see sixty-five and sixty-six Mustangs too.  Not show cars either, just everyday drivers!

When our club was formed, Model Ts were anywhere from 27 to 45 years old, and I wonder if it was just as common to see Model Ts on the road everyday in 1954, as it is to see trucks or Mustangs like mine now?  If they were a common site, many were probably being driven by their original owners too, just like me and my truck!

Now-a-days, people collect just about anything you can think of, and there are clubs for everything.  I’m guessing that in 1954, there weren’t very many collectors of Model T Fords, or many Model T clubs either.

How did a few guys in Long Beach find a common bond through these old cars and come together to form a club that has lasted 54 years?  Come to the October 9th meeting and find out!  Mark Hanna, Pete Mackenzie, and Ken Olsen, are going to tell us just how the LBMTC came to be, share some old club stories, and tell us about their first Ts.

We have a special evening planned to celebrate these anniversaries, and the founding members tales are just one part!  I have invited all Past Presidents to attend and be recognized, so there will be more stories and reminiscing.  Neil Maken from Skinned Knuckles magazine will be our guest speaker with stories, tips, tricks, and tidbits to share, and there will be special decorations and refreshments too.  Come early (6:30), and we’ll have pizza in the parking lot!  (Please RSVP to the club phone so we know how much pizza we need)  It should be a very fun evening, and there may be a surprise or two also.  Don’t forget to drive your Model T!

Happy Birthday Model T!
